Funerals arrangements are sometimes planned in advance.

People may decide to do this so that their loved ones know what their wishes are and also to relieve family members from making difficult and complicated decisions when the death occurs.

    Viewing, reposing & wake

The family decide where the viewing/reposing/wake will take place. Family members may choose to have a combination of a private viewing/reposing/wake at home and a public viewing/reposing/wake in our funeral home.

Lynch’s Funeral home is located in the heart of Castlegregory village, opposite St. Mary’s Church. We have two chapels in our funeral home. Our funeral home is available to families 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

A key is provided to the family so that they can be with their loved one at any time. We encourage family members to bring personal and treasured items that may belong to their loved one for display during viewing in our funeral home.

Care, preparation and embalming of a loved one

Embalming is about sanitizing, preserving and presenting the body so that the loved one may be presented in a manner that is natural and/or fits the character of the person.

Embalming is carried out so that the deceased can be viewed by family members in a family home, funeral home or nursing home/ hospital mortuary.

Our qualified embalmers believe that the care and preparation of the deceased is one of the most important roles that we provide.

    Funeral Music and Hymns Selection

To many, music can be a very important part of the funeral service either religious, non-religious, civil or humanist.

Music at funerals aims to comfort, provide solace or uplift the mourners. We have a number of suggestions for hymns or songs that might be of interest at various stages of the service.

We also have a number of local musicians, choirs, soloists or organists that we can introduce to the grieving family.

  • Funeral Costs and Payment

    Funeral Costs and Payment

Family members often ask us up front ‘how much will the funeral cost?’ We work with each family from the outset and discuss the costs.

The cost of the funeral will depend on a number of factors which include:

    • Will the funeral viewing/reposing/wake be held in our funeral home or at the family home?
    • What type of coffin, casket or urn is preferred?
    • Will the deceased be buried in an existing grave or new family grave?
    • Will the remains be cremated?
    • What type of religious service or civil service is required?
    • How many death notices are required and in which media?
    • Is a live recording/webcast required? Is there a choir required?
    • Is/are there funeral car(s) required?

    Help towards funeral costs

There are other social welfare benefits and payments which may be claimed depending on circumstances. The Citizens Information Board and/or the Department of Social Protection’s Community Welfare Service can provide information about social welfare benefits and payments which may be claimed depending on circumstances.

Forum on End of Life

The Forum on End-of-Life in Ireland is an Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF) project.  It engages with the public on end-of-life issues to find what people in Ireland believed about dying, death and bereavement.

The National Council of the Forum on End of Life is now taking on the work and vision of the Forum.  It is chaired by Mrs. Justice Catherine McGuinness.
